Another one bites the dust…
The title is unrelated to the topic, since I don’t have a topic to discuss.
The amount of anti-India rhetoric that has been given space in western media has been staggering, and I am comparing it with the normal caricaturist portrayal of the oriental i.e. some barely clothed woman fetching water in a mud pitcher in a desert, or the abject dirtiness of slums of Mumbai. There are some things that are obvious from this phenomenon. But let me first tell you what has been new:
- The “gang rape” in India. There was a increased focus on India and rape, but the constantly linking the Indian culture with rape – and this is not reported as rape culture but Indian culture is new. There was news that anti-india rhetoric has been fed by Iranian and the Chinese, but its support in the west is shocking to me.
- The linking of India with shit. This is also an old stereotype which I wasn’t even aware of until I questioned why the Germans are comfortable to piss on street corners after a weekend of bar-hopping and was promptly asked that I have no right to be surprised as an Indian. This linking was also predominantly done by Muslim neighbors of India specially Pakistanis as a way to show how they are superior to Hindus, but the space given to this by the western powers-that-be has normalized it.
- Modi is a fascist dictator. It is obvious who is propagating this. These are not the Chinese or the Islamic dictators of the middle east. This is the democrats in the USA and bi-partisan American system, because it is directed specifically towards India, specifically towards the current government and specifically for the liberal public of the West (the conservatives don’t need a reason to hate non-Christian brown people trying to break out of their god-given subservient role). This was also present forever – it as never “BJP”, always “BJP (Hindu nationalist party)” – but constantly tagging Modi as a fascist dictator who is trampling the minorities – has been promoted by the likes of BBC, Guardian and NYT. Of course, Modi is the elected prime-minister who is literally running a minority government right now and has been called all kinds of names by its opposition who actually have caused multiple riots but all that requires actually understanding Indian politics. The anti-Modi and actually anti-Indian government propaganda is designed to convert the anti-India propaganda into a one-two punch – because you can’t just say that you hate Indian government but like Indians – like you can do with the Chinese (never-mind that the Chinese are bigger nationalists and are actually running concentration camps against Muslims). Now you can be racist against Indians without guilt.
I would have thought that this is because of government’s policy to not decisively support the West in its war against Russia (or Russia’s war against Ukraine). But there are larger parties involved here that Ukraine:
- India-Iran relationship was de-prioritized under Modi government. This has led to Iran getting involved in anti-India propaganda.
- ISI/Pakistan and its deep rooted relationship with USA which has become symbiotic. I am sure there are clear ISI plants in the American system cultivated over years.
- India-USA relationship also pushes the Chinese to sabotage it by turning the American public support against it. They are a super power after all – they can project it overseas.
- Hinduism irks not only all kinds of Abrahamic religious people but also the communists who just can’t stomach a non-communist power opposing the capitalists. All non-communists must accept the paternalistic approach of the communists towards them.
Meanwhile, there has been no support for moving any manufacturing to India from China. The trade between the West and China keeps growing with random sanctions that don’t seem to work. There has been foreign interference from the West instead, where they have successfully stopped farm laws that would have given India – a predominantly agrarian economy – an edge in the international market. Basically – we won’t give you manufacturing and we don’t let you do farming. Instead they have worked against the Bangladesh government that was closely working with India and “peacefully” supplanted it with a western stooge that is overseeing actual oppression of minorities. Which is exactly what they did with Pakistan.
But what has become very obvious to me is that India cannot count of western support at any time in future, and should brace to see a resurgence in Pakistan/ISI funding and expect same in Bangladesh.
